Hot Tips to Maximize Your Ab Exercises

When looking at the types of abdominal exercises, it is best to divide the exercises into upper and lower ab exercises. Because there aren’t two separate muscles that you can isolate, the abdominal exercises we discuss here will work the entire abdominal wall.

There are different clusters of muscle that are separated by tissue in the abdominal muscles and these clusters make up the “washboard” or the “six-pack” effect in a persons abdominals. You can focus on the upper clusters by moving the torso and focus on the lower clusters by moving the pelvis.

For the lower abdominals, lying leg raises and reverse crunches are great abdominal exercises. Reverse crunches can be done on the ground or on an incline sit-up board. All you need is something behind your head to hold. If you use the incline board, use it with your feet lower than your head. For lying leg raises, lie on your back with your hands, palms down under your buttocks.

Raise your legs about 12″ off the floor and hold them there. If you’re big or have long legs, you should probably avoid this exercise. If you have this problem you can either try bending your knees slightly or just try some other abdominal exercises.

For the upper abs, ab crunches and quarter crunches are excellent abdominal exercises. Lying on your back, put your knees up in the air so that your thighs are at a right angle to your torso, with your knees bent. You can rest your feet on something, like a chair. Slowly raise your shoulders off the ground and try to touch your breastbone to your pelvis. Although the actual movement will be very small, you should try to go as high as possible. Only your spine should bend, your hips should not move.

Do these abdominal exercises fairly slowly to avoid using momentum to help. You can increase the difficulty of the exercise by extending your hands out behind your head instead of keeping them at the side. Make sure you don’t jerk your hands forward to help with the crunch, keep them still. If you follow these tips, your abdominal exercises should help you to get the great six pack you’ve always wanted.

Let’s face it, you have other things to do than spend 2 hours a day in the gym. In fact, you can complete a total body workout in less than 45 minutes. The first step to maximizing time in the gym is selecting the right exercises. If you are spending a lot of time on machines that move only one joint at a time, you are wasting time. It is simple, move more joints, up the intensity, get more results. Try this simple workout that involves no machines. Exercises are paired, so do a set with one exercise, then a set with the other exercise in the pair.

Pair #1

DB squat press - 3 x 8

Stand with feet shoulder width apart, hold a set of DB’s, perform a squat, on the way up, press the DB’s over your head.

Crunches - 3 x 15

Pair #2

Pull ups 3 x failure

That’s right, pull ups. If your gym has an assisted pull up machine, use that. If not, lay under a bar with feet planted on the floor and chest under bar. Pull you chest up to the bar and then lower yourself under control. This motion is the opposite of a push up.

Rotational lunges 3 x 8 each side

Hold a medicine ball or DB (about 5 - 8 pounds), perform a lunge and turn the trunk to the side you lunge with (lunge right, twist right, lunge left, twist left).

Pair # 3

Bench Dips 3 x 12-15

Sit on a bench, put you hands on each side of your hips with fingers hanging off the edge of the bench. Slide your butt off the bench and lower yourself until your upper arm is parallel to the ground. Then return to start position. Try to keep your back straight and as close as possible to the bench. To increase difficulty, extend legs out fully or put feet on a stability ball.

Supine leg curl 3 x 10

Lay on the ground facing up and place your heels and ankles on a stability ball. Raise your butt in the air and curl the ball into your body. Then push it out.

Try this workout 2 -3 times per week. You should be able to complete it in less than 45 minutes.

How about adding home made biscuits, or a card with a personal message that means something uniquely to them? The point is that spending all day surrounded by presents is no match for the gift of family and friends being together.

While gift cards may be considered a bit impersonal, it is better than getting that loved one a gift they do not need or like. Gift cards are a great back-up plan when research and questioning have failed to provide you with any ideas. Tropical Hurricane Alberto Rings in the 2006 Tropical Hurricane Season as First Storm

Well here we go again as they say and Tropical Depression, now Tropical Storm Alberto is on its way. Indeed it is expected to reach Hurricane status and that means series destruction for where ever wind and sea meet land.

As folks finally are getting over the 2005 Atlantic Tropical Hurricane Season and the Gulf Coast is not even close to getting rebuilt and New Orleans is still a natural disaster area we are rip roaring and ready to go again. This has been La Nina year and generally those are followed by more robust Hurricane Seasons.

Indeed the 2006 Atlantic Tropical Hurricane Season is expected to be a major one and perhaps not quite as bad as the last record breaking years, however it is expected to break some records, we just do not know which one’s yet.

Suffice it to say that if Alberto is headed your way into the Gulf or Mexico or along the Florida Coast, that if you are told to evacuate, then take that advice and get your family and yourself out of dodge. Hurricane seasons come and go, some are worse than others and we can replace the damage to our civilization, but if Tropical Hurricane Alberto comes for your family remember we cannot replace you. Consider all this in 2006.

Don’t Wait for a Hurricane Katrina to Do Your Home Inventory!

Start by making a list of your possessions, describing each item and noting where you bought it and its make and model. Clip to your list any sales receipts, purchase contracts, and appraisals you have. For clothing, count the items you own by category — pants, coats, shoes, for example — making notes about those that are especially valuable. For major appliance and electronic equipment, record their serial numbers, usually found on the back or bottom. It shouldn’t take you very long at first… TV, clock radio, clothes, and your goldfish!

• Don’t put it off!

If you are just setting up a household, starting an inventory list can be relatively simple. If you’ve been living in the same house for many years, however, the task of creating a list may seem overwhelming. Still, it’s better to have an incomplete inventory than nothing at all. Start with recent purchases and then try to remember what you can about older possessions.

• Big ticket items

Valuable items like jewelry, art work and collectibles may have increased in value since you received them. Check with your agent to make sure that you have adequate insurance for these items. They may need to be insured separately.

• Take a picture

Besides the list, you can take pictures of rooms and important individual items. On the back of the photos, note what is shown and where you bought it or the make. Don’t forget things in closets or drawers.

• Videotape it

Walk through your house or apartment videotaping and describing the contents.

• Use a personal computer

Use your PC to make your inventory list. Personal finance software packages often include a homeowners room-by-room inventory program.

Storing the list, photos and tapes

Regardless of how you do it (written list, CD, floppy disk, photos, videotape or audio tape), keep your inventory along with receipts in your safe deposit box or at a friend’s or relative’s home. That way you’ll be sure to have something to give your insurance representative if your home is damaged. When you make a significant purchase, add the information to your inventory while the details are fresh in your mind.

It Takes More Than Exercise, Good Foods, and Smiles

I wish I could tell you that you needed to do 100 squats a day to be in perfect shape.

I wish I could tell you that all you needed to do was eat healthy foods or just smile most of the day and you’d reach your ultimate health and fitness goals.

Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. These are only some of the pieces.

Don’t listen to those who tell you exercise, nutrition and a good attitude is the magic pill. It isn’t. Just doing these things won’t cut it.

Why?

You’ll end up back where you started again. It is not a coincidence that dieters gain the weight back. It is not by chance that strict workout routines fade into once a month routines. The people with even the best intentions fail when they haven’t included one essential aspect in your fitness plan.

Before I mention what that is, I want to make one thing clear… when you fail at your fitness, it’s not because you are a loser or can’t cut it or any other self defeating thing you may think. Though you’d be surprised at how many people think this is the case. The reason you fail is because you were never given the right formula for success.

I’m going to give it to you right now.

Successful people see the outcome. They visualize themselves achieving their goals. Successful people picture themselves at the finish line, 20 pounds lighter, with great skin, flexible, and in great health.

Michael Jordan, Lance Armstrong, Arnold Palmer… all the great athletes that you can think of separate themselves because they visualize their success.

And more so than just seeing the future, they can feel it.

Think about something that you really wanted. I mean REALLY wanted.

I remember when I was about 7 or 8 I wanted the G.I. JOE aircraft carrier. This thing was the motherload of all toys at the time. I can remember seeing the commercials on the TV and imagining how the flight deck felt as I landed my planes and moved the figurines around it. I would spend nights thinking about the thing. I put it on my birthday list, I put it on my Christmas list. Everywhere. I knew I was going to get it because I could close my eyes and see it right in front of me.

But on Christmas day, it wasn’t there under the tree. I was devastated, disappointed, I couldn’t believe it wasn’t there. It was all I wanted.

I persisted. I asked my mother, “Are you sure you didn’t get it for me?” She responded with a solid, “Nope.” I didn’t believe her. I looked in the closets. I looked in the garage.

Then I went in the basement.

And there is was. Fully assembled. With a fleet ready and waiting for the next attack.

How does a G.I. JOE aircraft carrier apply to you and your fitness?

It’s simple. You have to see yourself in good health.

When you’re lying in bed, imagine yourself feeling good, working out and smiling. Imagine the things you’ll say when you are in great shape. Imagine how people will respond to you when you’re 2 sizes smaller. Imagine the type of clothes you’ll wear. Schedule your days. Make appointments with people you’ve been too afraid to speak to because you were too self conscious.

I mean do everything possible to make this dream of yours a reality.

Shame on your sixth grade teacher who said to stop daydreaming and looking out the window during class. They’ve unknowingly squashed your ability to picture yourself being a success.

Look out the window and imagine yourself breathing in that air after a walk in the woods or at a park.

Daydream and focus on your goal of great health. Then you can start to exercise. Then you can start to eat right. Then you can and will start to smile every time you think about how great it feels to be in phenomenal shape!
