Super Mario Bros, Best Selling Video Game Of All Time

Have you ever wondered what the best selling video game of all time is? Well the guys over at Gaming Steve asked just that, and what they found may surprise some of you.

As it turns out, Super Mario Bros, takes the number one spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as selling the most copies. An accolade helped in large part by its bundling with the NES.

In the PC world, the oddly popular The Sims take top spot, with Pac-Man walking off with number one in the arcade community. As a measure of their success, all of these titles have seen unbelievable franchise success with countless additions and spin-offs.

Though Halo 2 didn’t make the list for most copies sold, it is the highest selling title of all time with sales in the millions world wide. Halo also holds the record for most games sold in a single day.

With the Nintendo Revolution, Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 opening the doors for a whole new generation of gamers, it will be interesting to see if Mario can hold the top spot in a few years down the road. No doubt we will once again see Mario and all of our favorite franchise again in the near future.

Speakerphone Embarrassment

A few weeks ago, I was talking to one of my co-workers about several projects we had been working on in the past few months. I put her on speakerphone so that I could have both hands free for pulling up data on my desk PC. A few minutes later, another co-worker entered my office with a report pertaining to one of our projects which we had been anxiously awaiting. The co-worker who handed me the report was silent, seeing that I was on the phone. I told the co-worker I was on the phone with that I had just received the report from the other co-worker, to which she relied “He really creeps me out, for some reason”. Of course, the co-worker in question heard her say that, and there I was sitting their with my mouth agape at what had just happened. I looked at him and before I could say anything, my co-worker on the phone went into a tirade, criticizing this man for his demeanor while he was standing there listening to every word. I stopped her and said that I would have to call her back as I was needed down the hall. Needless to say, I was thoroughly embarrassed and apologized profusely for her behavior. I told him that I certainly didn’t feel that way or agree with her and that I hoped her saying those things would not give him a bad impression of me. I could tell he was upset, having just heard that someone disliked him for being himself, and I felt awful about the whole incident. After he left my office, I then started to think of how I had failed mention that he was in my office to my co-worker on the phone. I felt completely responsible for what would now be a strained relationship at best between those two.

I now only use the speakerphone option during meetings. I never heard any more from him in regard to the situation, nor did I ever tell my other co-worker that he had heard what she said. Despite nothing really happening, I plan to play it safe next time to avoid being sorry. Maybe I’ll get a headset for those times when I need both hands free. Anything which could help to avoid having a situation like that happen again is a smart idea.

The Lactate Threshold - Reality or Fallacy?

For many years exercise science has perpetuated the concept of a lactate threshold - a point during exercise where a sudden, sharp increase is noted in the concentration of lactate in the blood. This phenomenon is supposedly noticed when blood samples are taken from subjects performing incremental to max exercise tests much the same as a VO2 max test. Traditionally, it has been noted that when concentration of lactate is plotted against running speed (or %VO2 max) on a graph, as the individual runs faster the quantity of lactate in the blood remains constant up to a certain speed, after which a sudden inflection in the gradient occurs. This inflection point has been dubbed the lactate threshold - the point during intense exercise where the muscles become increasingly anaerobic, generating vast quantities of lactate. Therefore, this phenomenon has also become known as the anaerobic or ventilation threshold.

As discussed in an earlier article on lactate featured on this website, early exercise scientists (and even some present day ones) attributed the increasing amounts of lactate in the blood during exercise to a lack of oxygen supplied to the muscles. This theory holds that the cardiorespiratory system must be inefficient at matching blood (oxygen) supply to the muscles and exercise intensity. Therefore, as the intensity of exercise increases, the muscles have to rely increasingly on “oxygen independent” (anaerobic) metabolism and its associated lactate generation. What these researchers failed to understand, or were unaware of was that as the intensity level (power output) of exercise progressively increases, there is a corresponding increase in the dependence of the glycolytic energy system. It is now universally accepted that energy systems are exercise intensity dependent. As explained in the previous article on lactate, this accumulation of lactate is a necessary consequence to maintain the increased flow of energy through the glycolytic pathway.

Tim Noakes at the University of Cape Town, South Africa states that it is highly unlikely that the muscles ever become truly anaerobic. He provides some powerful evidence to back up this statement and quite possibly the most convincing might be what he calls the “lactate paradox”. In his studies of the results of several research papers on Everest climbing expedition experiments, Noakes noted that lactate accumulation in the blood actually decreased as attitude increased. This finding is the exact opposite of what one would traditionally expect since as altitude increases, the ambient barometric pressure decreases, as does the relative availability of oxygen in the inspired air. Therefore, one would suspect that near the peak of Everest, the exercising muscles must be truly anaerobic and generating large amounts of lactate but as mentioned previously, this does not occur. Professor Noakes explains that at such an extreme altitude, some internally regulated factor (possibly the brain) severely limits the intensity of exercise to protect the heart therefore also limiting the amount of lactate production. Additional research, has demonstrated that even at rest under more than adequate oxygen availability, muscles generate lactate. Furthermore, other researchers have failed to find conclusive evidence that muscles become anaerobic at exercise intensities approaching the lactate threshold or even during maximal exercise. Therefore, Noakes prefers to refer to anaerobic metabolism as “oxygen independent” metabolism since in his astute opinion there exists no such thing as anaerobic muscle.

Noakes dismisses the probability of a sudden increase in lactate concentration. He explains that if too few blood samples are taken - say for every three or four kilometers per hour increase, then when the rise in lactate is actually observed, it may indeed show a precipitous “jump” from the one observation to the next. If samples are taken more frequently however, say at every speed increment, then the increase is much more gradual, producing a smoother logarithmic or hyperbolic curve. Dr. Noakes indicates that lactate buildup during increasingly intense exercise is the result of its production rate exceeding its clearance. As mentioned in our article,Lactate is NOT the Culprit!, Brook’s lactate shuttle is purported as being responsible for assisting with the transport, utilization and clearance of lactate during exercise. At lower exercise intensity levels, the rate of lactate clearance is able to match the rate of production. However, as exercise becomes increasingly more intense and more muscle mass is recruited, proportionately large quantities of lactate are produced, but it is unlikely that clearance via the shuttle will be able to maintain pace. Therefore, there exists a speed or intensity level at which the production of lactate surpasses its clearance and the blood concentration begins to steadily increase. This point is what Noakes prefers to call for lack of a better word - the “lactate turnpoint” and that it occurs at an intensity/speed where the concentration of lactate in the blood is approximately 3.0 mmol/L. If the individual were to run at this constant speed, this would be called running at the subjects “lactate steady state”. In theory this is the fastest speed that can be maintained by the exerciser for extended periods of time such as marathon running.

Therefore, from discussions in this and previous articles, it is safe to conclude that lactate production in the body is the direct result of an increased reliance on the glycolytic energy systems, not from a lack of oxygen in the muscles. Paired with this increased use of oxygen independent metabolism is an increase in lactate production. The sudden jump in lactate production simply does not exist; it increases proportionally with the increased exercise intensity or power output. In addition, it should be obvious that the term anaerobic threshold is a misnomer and that perhaps the only appropriate term to refer to this phenomenon is the lactate turnpoint.

References and further reading: more information on the concept oxygen independent metabolism and the lactate turnpoint may be found in Lore of Running - a classic book in its fourth edition dedicated not only to running performance, but to cutting edge exercise physiology as well.

Ninjutsu Martial Arts Strategy: Key Moments & Phases in a Self-Defense Situation

A major pivoting point in my ninjutsu martial arts learning process happened when I realized that there was something more going on than just the punching, kicking, and what-not, that makes up conventional martial arts and self-defense training. In fact, once I saw it happening, my mind shifted away from the typical orientation toward this “style” or that, and started looking beyond the techniques themselves to…

…what was being “done” by each move in a technique string.

The question I began to ask was, “what’s the logic behind the moves?” And, “why are the moves where they are in this particular string?”

And THAT is what the book, “Controlling the Fight: The 5 Keys of Effective Self-Defense Strategy,” is all about.

It’s about understanding and recognizing the keys, or bridges, between one phase…

…one strategic moment…

…in a self-defense situation, and another.

It’s about controlling the “pieces” of a fight-scenario that must be strategically managed in the correct order, and at the correct time, if you are to be successful.

What are these critical moments within the flow of the fight? Let me first tell you what they’re NOT.

They are not…

…when you’re fist makes contact with the surface of your assailant’s body…

…when you lock his joints to immobilize him and prevent him from continuing to fight…

…when you take up your “way-cool” stance…

…the way with which you’ve been taught to hold your weapon, or…

…a hundred other “things” that most books, videos, and schools of martial arts and self-defense focus almost exclusively on.

But, they are not NOT these things either. If you don’t understand what I’m trying to point out here, you won’t see it.

Confused? Don’t be.

The point here is that, behind any move or technique itself - the punch, lock, throw, etc. - there is a “reason” that THAT particular technique is being done at THAT way, and at THAT particular time. There is something that the technique is either doing ‘for’ us or ‘to’ our attacker that gains, maintains, or accentuates our control of the situation. In short…

…there is something that makes a particular technique RIGHT and APPROPRIATE for any given moment…

…and completely WRONG for another.

And, make no mistake here. We are talking about a scientific application of principles that work, and have worked for centuries. And, this science works…

…for whoever is knowledgeable of, and in control of it in the fight!

What it means is this; if you know how to use this scientific application and make it the logic behind your strategic use of your skills and techniques, then you will probably win. If you don’t and your assailant does, you will lose.

So, what are these key moments or critical phases?

They are…

1) Your ability to assess your situation and understand what the assailant is doing or attempting to do to you.

2) Your defense against his incoming attacks. This is your ability to neutralize the effect that his attacks were to have on you.

3) How you unbalance him in a way that prevents your assailant from going on with his own strategy and literally puts him in a position of weakness.

4) The actual counter-attack that you use to knock him back or take him to the ground. This is the phase where you actually take the fight to him.

5) Your ability to assess the effect that your technique has had on your assailant and what your next move (escape, restrain him, or prepare for another barrage of attacks) should be.

In my attempt to learn how to really be successful at defending myself and others, I was lucky enough to find some teachers who could point the way towards many of these answers. Unfortunately (or fortunately, as this caused me to have to really look), we’re not talking about the step-by-step mechanics of the “style” here, as these can be taught by practically anyone to almost anyone else. What we ARE talking about is something that cannot be seen unless you know what you’re looking for. It’s invisible to the naked eye but there nonetheless.

Just know this. Each of these critical moments - these keys - is an important, no crucial, element in any overall defense strategy. But, where the book “The Karate-Myth” focused on the big-picture defense strategy that lead from General Awareness to Actually having to Deal with the Attacker (remember?), what I’m talking about here is the little-picture strategy of phase 6 - “dealing with the attack.”

Where an overall general self-defense strategy is ultimately designed to “avoid” dangerous situations altogether; this life-saving knowledge is all about effectively and efficiently handling one one you find yourself in it.

And, when the “rubber-meets-the-road,” so-to-speak…

…it doesn’t matter how many way-cool techniques you know, so much as…

…what you can “do” with them.

romancing all corners
cutting out its lonely paths

looking for her, that harbours
and, i the chosen morphed into fluids
…the races of life began at conception

dear mother,
days stumbled into months
egglings, from your womb harboured me
and the fluids formed into being
enshrouded in you, body and soul;
eating and sucking all day long
…this, is the making of me

…DETENTION

distanced we sat, barred from
spoken words
masked, our lives became one
volume of thoughts race
our troubled minds
ideas,
morphed into forms

…unspoken,
we had said volumes
neither by mouth nor scribbles
of our dried fountains
we have rocked minds;
and shared unchained thoughts
… who can seal or hold in captive
a troubled mind

DRAUGHT

tensed we watched
as our fathers before us, has done
we watched as dawn streaks across the neighing sky
another day has come
with it, hope that lingers

we watched as the crops, whither
as the herds stifle by the river beds
we saw the cracks all around us
and, the sun
scorched harshly upon us

we watched as the skies refuse
to fall its tears and to succor our parching thirst
the field has broken, in piece!
threatening,
to welcome our weakening bones

MAN

i appreciate

the habitats called man

i worship

God, that created man

i’m disappointed

Internet faxing easy guides: a cheaper way to send your fax

Nowadays, fax services are undeniable one of the most important
communications among human. If doesn’t matter how big is your
business, what’s your business nature and how you run your
business - you just need a fax service to send out those
documents. The recent survey that shows a bigger percentage of
business phone bills are for faxing prove that the fax is still
one of the ‘must-have services’ for your office.

However, faxing nowadays doesn’t rely only on conventional
faxing machine. By utilizing the Internet, we can now easily
send out ‘eFax’. Internet faxing,
or sometimes known as email faxing or online fax, is one of the
latest technologies that provides its users to send and receive
faxes without a fax machine. Instead, Internet access and an
email account is all that is required.

If you used a fax machine before then you can understand how
frustrating it is when the fax machine jams, cuts off page text,
stops in the middle of a transmission, or the receiving fax
machine is constantly busy or out of paper. Further more, the
extra cost of maintaining a fax machine become a heavy burden to
the users.

Internet faxing is giving a much more convenient faxing service
to the user compare to traditional fax machine. No more paper
jamming, smooth transmission, 24 hours stand by with no more
engage tone, and most of all, minimum cost for maintaining the
service. Also, Internet faxing users don’t need to pay for the
extra phone line, fax equipments and maintenance cost. All you
need is to pay the subscribing fees to the faxing software and
the cost per fax.

Seeing Internet fax as an effective answer to the old fax
machine, several vendors have produced and are selling Internet
faxing services nowadays. There are companies that offer
software only solutions that allow you to fax directly from your
computer to any fax machine; and there are services offer
fax-to-IP Internet gateway products, which are hardware-based
routers that emulate a fax machines.

Faxing services that use software (for example eFax or CallWave
fax) require that you sign up with fax service provider. For
eFax Internet faxing services, the monthly service charge is
from $0-$19.95 depend on which package you go for; while
limiting their users to only receive fax, CallWave fax charge
their users less than 10 bucks per monthly. The advantages of
using this method are that faxing becomes considerably cheaper
because you are not making long distance connections over the
phone lines, no hardware is required, you get faster
transmission, you can send many faxes at once, no dedicated fax
lines are needed, and a web interface is available if you wish
to add fax-on-demand capability to a website.

Another type of Internet faxing is known as fax-to-IP. Fax-to-IP
Internet gateway products needs hardware-based routers that
emulate a fax machines. With these, faxing is done in the
regular way using the fax machine, but the gateway device, which
then dials the destination fax machine and sends the fax,
interrupts the process. The fax-to-IP service is good if you
don’t send a lot of faxes, but would still like to take
advantage of the savings of using Internet delivery. It is also
good if you do a lot of international fax calls. The
disadvantages are that you won’t save much on either domestic
faxing, or faxing to countries where the Internet infrastructure
is less well developed.

Undeniable, faxing is one of the core communications in our
daily life. With the rise of high speed Internet, Internet
faxing had gave us a new option on faxing. As the monthly
running cost of Internet faxing is relative low and you can
always enjoy a free trial on the service, we believe you should
give a try on this latest technology.

Three Love Poems [all wicked]

Advance: Mr. Dennis Siluk’s poetry can have its fire-hearted twists: as with ‘Lovers’…’, and ‘Death…’ and the ‘Loves’s Curse’;but love can carry with it, luring assets, especially in these three poems, as you will soon see; two of which he calls sonnets. He sings a dim song, but it all seems to fit in the river of bitter waters; or salty waters. Be that as it may, they are worth the adventure in reading them, weary as they may be. For those interested, his new book of poems will be out in weeks, “Spell of the Adnes,” it will be a charming book. Rosa Penaloza

Loves’ December
[or: December’s Sonnet]

Love died here

Songs ago;
O’er her breasts,

Two-faced soul,
Roses throw;

No more tears;

By and by,
Poppies near!

By and by,
De’cber -tears

To Death’s King

Does not die!
Wakes when white

December’s high!

#731/ 6/12/05

Death’s Sonnet

Day has flown!

Dim with gray
The winds sway

The Hell’s moan
Stand alone!

For this day

Is your repay
And atone!

Rare I know,
Life was so

Through the halls

Of the Hell,
Echoes dreams

Of Heaven!

Lovers’ Curse

Lovers’ are
Slipper than ice
This I know to be true

They pretend to be nice,
As you like,
And rip your heart
In two…!

If it were not so
They’d let you go
And let you know
That you’re
Neither last, nor first…

But they don’t
And won’t:

This is the lovers’ curse.

I Love Spam

Spam is considered any unsolicited and often un-wanted e-mail. The term seems to have originated from a Monty Python sketch set in a cafe that serves nothing but the canned, processed meat, called Spam.

In the skit there is a table of Vikings singing, spam, spam, spam, spam, lovely spam. While the skit does arouse laughter, the receiving of spam e-mail usually does not do the same for our demeanor.

It is the rare inbox which hasn’t been visited by some sort of un-wanted message containing anything from get-rich-quick schemes to Cyber-Porn.

Most email browsers or accounts allow a person to use blocking or filtering mechanisms which send junk mail directly to the trash bin.

Professional spammers use sophisticated software that actually spiders the Internet gleaning e-mail addresses from Web sites.

If you have ever filled out an online survey, your e-mail address has most likely ended up on a for sale list of targeted buyers.

While most spam and postal junk mail is annoying, it can have some benefits. Running an online business requires us at times to be effective ad writers. Immediately deleting all this junk mail means you are throwing way an opportunity to learn ad strategies.

Next time spam shows up, why not take a few minutes to read through these ads and see how they are written. See if the headline or body attracts your attention, or what is effective about the ad and what turns you off.

I actually love it when those card decks come in the postal mail. Flipping through the cards, I’ll put those that have attractive headlines in one pile, trash the ones that aren’t appealing, then go back later and really read the one’s in the first pile.

I’m always on the lookout for new ideas on what works in ad writing, new tactics ad writers employ, and seeing what is working and not working for them.

Successful online marketers are constantly studying not only their own ads, but what others are doing. So instead of getting upset the next time you receive your daily dose of spam, why not look at it as an opportunity to help you become a better marketer?

If you would like your name removed from many of the bulk mailing lists, this Web site will be a blessing. Simply give them your e-mail address and they will scan their bulk mailing lists and remove you. It is a unique concept they have. You can read more about what they do at their Web site.

If you have a website, then more than likely getting a high ranking is of utmost importance. However, you might not know the best way to go about increasing your links. Consider the following suggestions in order to build your links and promote your website.

Suggestion #1 - Reciprocal Link Manager Software

You can always work on gaining reciprocal links on your own, however if you are very busy then a reciprocal link manager software will be of utmost importance to you because it will initiate and setup your new links and then maintain them as well. The software will continue requesting new links for your websites and inform you when links have been added as well as delete any old links that are no longer working.

Suggestion #2 - Weigh Your Popularity

Since the amount of links to your website ultimately determines your websites popularity with many search engines, it is important to have a lot of links. However, you need to know where your website stands in the search engine rankings in order to see how much work you need to do to increase and maintain that popularity rating. There are software programs that will help you do this and it is certainly a smart idea to monitor your link popularity progress.

Suggestion #3 - Secrets to Link Building

While software can take a lot of the work out of increasing your links, there is one great secret to link building you should keep in mind. That secret is the personal touch. If you send an email to a webmaster complimenting them on their website and provide a good reason why you want them to link to your page, you will have a good chance of receiving your request. Keep this in mind and pinpoint the top 25 websites you are most interested in having a link to your page, then make the effort to personally contact them rather than through software. It will be more effective.

There are many ways to increase your link popularity and you’ll end up with a highly ranked website because of it. However, keep in mind that the personal touch will certainly go a long way and sometimes it is the only way to get the links you really want. Let your software do the grunt work on the regular list of websites you want to contact for links, but the really important ones go after yourself.

This in itself is a tactic like no other, especially in a world when everything is computerized and run by technology. Remember, people are still behind those keyboards and when you make personal contact, you do yourself and your website a favor.
